"Train 55 from Oslo to Stockholm... has derailed near Skotterud," the Norwegian train operator NTB said in a statement.

According to Swedish train operator SJ there were 340 people on board the Intercity train when it left the tracks just short of the Swedish border.

Trond Sulen of the Hedmark district police told AFP that two carriages of the train had toppled over in the accident.

Swedish and Norwegian emergency services rushed to the scene to aid the injured, none of whom were reported to be seriously hurt.

The train left the Norwegian capital Oslo at 4pm and was due to arrive in Stockholm at 10.06pm.
