Date released for Nobel Literature Prize
The Swedish Academy said on Friday that the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature will be announced on Thursday, October 7th.
The permanent secretary of the Academy, Peter Englund, will make the much-awaited announcement in Stockholm on Thursday at 1pm (11am GMT).
Unlike the other Nobel prizes, the date for the Literature announcement traditionally remains secret until just days before the big day, although the prize is always attributed on a Thursday in October.
This year's Nobel season will kick off Monday with the Medicine Prize, followed by Physics on Tuesday, Chemistry on Wednesday, Literature on Thursday and Peace on Friday.
The season will wrap up on Monday, October 11th, with the announcement of the
Economy Prize.
In line with tradition, the Swedish Academy gave no indication of its choice for the literature prize. It never reveals the names it is considering, and its deliberations are sealed for 50 years.
Speculation has so far been somewhat muted for the 2010 prize.
Speculation in Stockholm literary circles ahead of the 2009 prize indicated that it was time for the prize to be given to a poet, but it was instead given to the German writer Herta Müller.
The last poet to win was Wislawa Szymborska of Poland in 1996.
