"It has been an unusually cold start to September in the whole country," said Anna Österman at SMHI.

Northern Sweden officially welcomed the autumn already in mid-August, which is considered normal. By August 24th the autumn had reached as far south as eastern Jämtland and by the end of the month autumn temperatures were being felt as far south as northern Svealand.

The beginning of September has continued in the same vein with temperatures in the first three days of the month at unseasonal lows in many parts.

"In Stockholm it has been three degrees (Celsius) under the average daily temperature. Visby has had two degrees colder as has Sundsvall, Östersun and Umeå," said Österman.

SMHI use the period 1961-1990 as a reference with regards to average temperatures.

Even in the southern areas of the country is has been colder than normal and is set to persist for a while yet.

"Götaland and Svealand will continue to have cooler temperatures than normal over the coming five days. Norrland will however experience more normal temperatures," said Anna Österman.

The autumn is adjudged to have arrived when average daily temperatures have dipped below ten degrees Celsius for at least five consecutive days.
