Economics Minister Rainer Brüderle says he wants to change the German immigration system along the lines of the Canadian points system, in order to identify and attract more well-qualified immigrants.

Der Spiegel reported on Saturday that his officials have prepared a paper promoting the introduction of a points system which would give priority to those wanting to enter the country who have the kind of skills most needed.

“Control can be exerted via such entry transparent criteria as for example need, qualification and integration ability,” the magazine said.

“The introduction of a flexible points system such as those other industrial states have already had for many years, could contribute to this, in the estimation of the economy ministry.”

Brüderle has already called for companies wanting to attract well-qualified workers to offer bonuses to those willing to come to Germany to take up the jobs on offer.

He said something needed to be done sooner rather than later to fill the jobs in Germany for which no qualified workers can be found.

“The loss of value-creation due to missing expert workers is enormous,” he said.
