Social Democrats focus on jobless youths

The Social Democrats are to focus on youth unemployment in a series of campaign posters ahead of next month’s election.

The party’s posters, to be displayed across the country, will remind voters that 200,000 young people are currently out of work and that 466,000 people of all ages are unemployed. The party is using Statistics Sweden’s official figures for the second quarter.

“The government is very aware that they will lose the election if the results of the government’s policies are discussed,” said Social Democrat leader Mona Sahlin as she presented the party’s campaign on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Moderates also launched their posters on Thursday, featuring the slogan ‘Den enda arbetarpartiet’ (‘The only workers’ party’), a play on the Social Democrats’ seldom-used full title, the Social Democratic Workers’ Party.

“If their major ambition for the election campaign is to take votes from us, my major ambition is to reduce the number of unemployed young people and to increase the number of jobs,” she said.
