Government parties gear up for election

Sweden’s four governing parties on Wednesday presented their plans for a common election campaign. The centre-right parties plan to spend 20 million kronor on the fight to retain power in the election, which will take place on September 19th.

Moderate Party chairman Per Schlingman and his counterparts from the Liberal, Centre and Christian Democrat parties presented the Alliance’s joint election election campaign posters at a press conference in Stockholm on Thursday.

The posters claim that Sweden is at a crossroads, and use slogans such as “Bakåt eller framåt?” (Backwards or forwards?) and “Bidrag eller fler jobb?” (Welfare or more jobs?).

The election campaign will include a nationwide bus tour. The coalition government has rented a bus that will visit all Sweden’s major cities. Cabinet ministers, party leaders and regional representatives of the parties will join the tour at different points.

The four parties will each run their own television and radio adverts, and will have a joint iPhone app.

Liberal Party secretary Erik Ullenhag said a large part of the campaign was about mobilizing party sympathizers. He said the Alliance would be helped by the fact that Sweden is facing a historic moment:

“If we win the election we will properly break the Social Democrats’ dominance, and Sweden will become more like other countries,” he said.
