Paedophile boasts of bribing himself free

A 63-year-old Swedish man convicted and sentenced to 6.5 years in prison for sexually assaulting three boys in Cambodia, believes that he will soon be a free man after handing over $11,000 in bribes.

The man has, among other offences, abused his own adopted Cambodian son for several years, the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) daily has reported.

The Swede has been in custody since he was arrested in May last year in Cambodia after police and social services had been tracking him for three years.

A Cambodian court will on Friday consider the man's appeal. It is then expected that the man's adopted son, who has previously testified against his father regarding sustained abuse, will change his story.

The man has had daily telephone contact with his adopted son while he has been in custody.

"I am training him so that he says the right things and does not contradict himself," the 63-year-old told SvD who had visited him in prison outside of the capital Phnom Penh.

The 63-year-old has been previously convicted for sexual offences against children in Sweden.

If the man is found not guilty in the Cambodian court an investigation could be launched in Sweden for child sex crimes committed overseas.

"We are awaiting what happens over there. We shall then study the whole case and appoint a prosecutor to rule on how to proceed. In which case we would have to conduct an investigation according to Swedish norms," said Lisbeth Tolfes, detective inspector at National Criminal Investigation Department (Rikskriminalen).

The child sex crimes unit at the department provided the Cambodian authorities with information about the 63-year-old man's sexual offences in Sweden.
