Swedes expect fall in jobless total

Most Swedes expect unemployment to fall in the coming year, according to a new poll. But those who work in the public sector expect to see job cuts in their own workplaces.

The poll, by Skop, shows broad optimism about employment prospects:

“Optimism is at its highest level since the start of the financial crisis, and a majority expects reduced unemployment,” said Skop analyst Örjan Hultåker.

52 percent of Swedes said they believed that more jobs would be created in the coming year.

Private sector employees were most optimistic about expansion at their own workplaces. One in three private sector workers said they expected to have more colleagues within the year.

The mood in the public sector was markedly more pessimistic. One in three of those questioned said the number of employees in their workplace would be cut. The number of public sector workers who expect cuts has increased by 11 percent since June.

Around 1,000 people aged 18 to 84 responded to Skop’s questions between 30th June and 15th July.
