Heavy rains forecast for eastern Sweden

Heavy rains have been forecast for the east coast of Sweden as the Meteorological Institute (Sveriges meteorologiska och hydrologiska institut - SMHI) issued a warning for northern areas.

SMHI meteorologists advise caution as up to 40 millimetres of rainfall is expected to fall during the course of the day in some areas.

"A low pressure front will move north over the Gulf of Bothnia during the day and in over Norrbotten. We don't know exactly where the rainfall will hit, but in coastal areas there can be a real downpour," meteorologist Lars Knutson at SMHI said in a statement.

SMHI has issued a class one (on a climbing scale of four) rainfall warning for all coastal areas from Gävle up to Sweden's border with Finland, covering the cities of Umeå, Luleå and Sundsvall among others.

The heavy rains have been caused by the warm weather in Finland which means that the rain falls from the cooler Swedish skies.

The skies are set to brighten somewhat late Thursday and Friday although a renewed low pressure front will bring more rain in eastern areas over the weekend.

The weather in southern areas of Sweden remained sunny on Wednesday however with Skåne enjoying plus 20 degrees Celsius temperatures.

The area around Gothenburg in western Sweden was experiencing cloudy weather with rains expected north and south along the coast on Thursday night.

The weekend is forecast to be wet in most areas of the country with only the northern fells enjoying sunny spells come Sunday.
