End of vacation traffic fills train to 200 percent capacity
More than 120 Deutsche Bahn passengers were forced to disembark from a train in Osnabrück on Sunday that was filled to up to double its capacity and could not go on, the national rail provider said.
On the last weekend of school vacation in the state of Lower Saxony, so many people were headed home that the Intercity regional train was already crammed with people.
When scores of people boarded the train at the city’s main train station, the number of passengers exceeded 200 percent of the train’s normal passenger allowance, a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson said.
Train personnel decided that proceeding would be impossible, and conductors worked with police to ask passengers to voluntarily get off the train.
Eventually the 120 people who had to get off were taken towards Bremen in another regional train, the company said.
Some 51 minutes later the train was able to leave the station.
