Germany scored double-gold Thursday night at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona, taking first place in both the women’s 100 metres sprint and the javelin throw.

Sprinter Verena Sailer took gold in the 100 metres with a time of 11.10 seconds. She is the first German woman to become a European sprint champion since Katrin Krabbe took the 100 metre title for communist East Germany 20 years ago.

“Unbelievable,” Sailer, 24, told broadcaster ARD. “I was just trembling, now I’m European champion. It’s crazy. This medal means everything to me. I’d been keeping in my mind the whole day how I would cross the finishin line in first place.”

Javelin-thrower Linda Stahl took gold with a throw of 66.81 metres and fellow-German Christina Obergföll won silver in the same event with 65.58 metres. Stahl’s was considered a surprise victory – she was only ranked number nine in Europe at the beginning of the competition.

“I would never have let myself dream of this,” she said. “I had jelly legs on the first two tries, but I knew I could knock out one more.”
