Stormy Sweden set for more warm weather

Stormy conditions led to flooding in parts of Sweden on Saturday night, but meteorologists forecast a return to glorious sunshine in the coming days.

Heavy rain and strong winds caused problems overnight in Stockholm, Gotland and Öland. Emergency services in Gotland were called out several times during the night to drain water from flooded cellars, while a road in Slite on the island’s east coast was closed off after a torrential downpour.

In Upplands Väsby, just north of Stockholm, a landslide displaced several streetlights but emergency services said the adjacent road had not been affected.

“There’s no risk of further landslides there,” a spokesperson for the emergency services told news agency TT.

The rain is expected to continue moving northwards across the country before gradually giving way to warmer temperatures and scattered showers on Monday

As the week progresses, southern parts of Sweden can expect a return to sunny weather and 25 degree heat .

“Cold air has drawn in over much of the country but warm air will begin coming in from the east on Monday,” said Anna Österman at meteorological agency SMHI.
