Among the dead were a married couple and their three grown children, two daughters aged 18 and 35, and a 33-year-old son. Another man, a farm hand who saved himself by jumping from the house was severely injured in the fall and died later on Tuesday morning at a hospital, police reported.

The family’s grandparents and two farm hands were injured. Meanwhile a 34-year-old seasonal worker from Poland was able to climb down the house from the top floor uninjured, police said.

Fire inspector Uwe Zimmermann said the house fire in the town near Wiesbaden spread throughout the building and leaping out of windows. Authorities believe the flames began on an upper floor of the house, which was completely destroyed.

Some 60 fire fighters worked for hours to quell the blaze, managing to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby barns full of cows and pigs.

One witness reported seeing fire fighters in tears over the disaster.

The grandfather of the family was able to free himself from the blaze, but returned to the home and had to be rescued by fire fighters.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown, the fire department said.
