On Monday morning, the man was found dead at around 8:30pm local time in some bushes at the foot of a cliff in a rural area north of Escondido. According to the news site, police do not suspect a crime was committed and believed the death was accidental.

A witness sighting led investigators to the body. The witness reported seeing a man wearing clothes that matched the victim's description hobbling on the side of the road with what appeared to be a twisted ankle.

According to US news reports, 33-year-old Reza Lavasani Dana was a Stockholm resident who had been on vacation in the San Diego area for about a week and was staying with a friend. The two had gone on a run in the midday summer heat on Thursday, which had reached 38 degrees.

During the run, Dana's companion lost sight of him and reported him missing a few hours later. Dana was unfamiliar with the area and did not carry identification, a cell phone or money.

Dozens of sheriff's search-and-rescue personnel with service dogs and volunteers endured temperatures of around 38 degrees as they combed the area on Friday and Saturday looking for him.
