Frankfurt police recently traded in their uniforms for bathing trunks to arrest a fugitive at a crowded public swimming pool, authorities said on Monday.

Officers were tipped off to the 28-year-old repeat offender’s whereabouts last Friday afternoon – he was with his family at the Brentanobad pool in the city's Rödelheim district.

But the man, who had a warrant out for his arrest after he failed to show up to serve a 16-month prison sentence, couldn’t escape the heat even in the water.

“In light of the casually attired swimming guests, an arrest in full police gear would have been too conspicuous, thus the idea was quickly born to go ‘armed’ with shorts, towels and bathing sandals to blend in at the pool,” the police statement said.

Amid more than 1,000 splashing guests, the officers took strategic positions, nabbing the “dumfounded” man when he separated from his family to buy a drink at a kiosk.

Officers also found two bars of hashish on the man.

The officers decided to don their uniforms before transporting the man to prison.
