Storms give way to heat
A man was killed on Friday night as storms hit northern Germany, causing a tree to fall on the tent in which he was staying, police confirmed on Saturday.
The 67-year-old from Berlin was camping in Teupitz in Brandenburg when he was killed in the storm. A further camper suffered shock, the police said.
A house near Königs Wusterhausen caught fire after lightning struck it, causing around €100,000 worth of damage. The owners were not at home at the time, and no-one was hurt. A bungalow in Groß Köris was also damaged by a lightning strike.
Parts of the Ruhr area were hit by hail as thunder storms struck the region, causing widespread spot floods and falling trees, blocking some roads.
In Bavaria damage estimated to cost several hundred thousand euros was caused by flooding and uprooted trees, as well as hail which in the Weilheim-Schongau area fell as large as tennis balls, causing chaos.
Lower Saxony and the upper Pfalz regions were also hit, with 100 fire fighters called to a house fire caused by a lighting strike – the building is now in danger of collapsing completely.
The cool North Sea air that has swept over the country on Friday evening and Saturday will be replaced by rapidly rising temperatures over the first half of the week, the German Weather Service said on Saturday.
The southeastern and eastern regions will still have some stormy and rainy conditions into Sunday, but this will not last for long, while the rest of the country will already have shrugged off the rain and have returned to warm, dry conditions.
Temperatures will reach between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius in the north, and between 23 and 28 degrees in the south.
Sunday night will be largely clear, with temperatures between 12 and 17 degrees, while Monday will be sunny and dry almost everywhere, with just a few storms to be expected in Alpine areas. A weak wind from the south will aid the rise of temperatures to between 24 degrees in the north east and 30 in the south west.
Tuesday will remain sunny and mostly dry with temperatures reaching highs of between 27 and 34 degrees.
