Carl Philip steps in to hand out Victoria Award
Prince Carl Philip is set to fill his big sister's shoes and hand out this year's Victoria Award (Victoriastipendiet) as the Crown Princess is away on her honeymoon, organisers announced on Wednesday.
The winner this year is Olympic champion cross-country skier Charlotte Kalla, who won gold and silver earlier this year in Whistler. She will receive her award on July 14th, Victoria's 33rd birthday, in Borgholm on the eastern island of Öland.
The award has honoured a Swedish athlete every year on Victoria's birthday since 1979. Organisers will follow tradition as best they can despite her absence this year.
Kay Wiestål, the promoter of Victoria Day, has received notice from the Royal Court that Carl Philip will hand out the Victoria Award this year. King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia and Princess Madeleine will also be present at the ceremony at Borgholm sports ground in the evening, the court wrote on its website.
"We are pleased that all four will come," Wiestål told news agency TT.
