Couples flock to tie knot on drop-in wedding day
An estimated 200 couples took the opportunity to get hitched at a popular Stockholm park’s first ever drop-in wedding day on Saturday.
“The interest is enormous; we’ve been caught off guard,” said Christina Hamnqvist, press spokeswoman for Skansen, Stockholm’s popular wildlife and heritage park.
Couples, mostly young, arrived at the park in their wedding outfits and armed with umbrellas before picking up their queue tickets and waiting to be wed.
“We’ve only got through about half of them. There are about a hundred left to be married and that’s going to take a while,” said Hamnqvist at 3pm, around an hour before the queue tickets were taken away.
On hand to do the honours were three celebrants for civil weddings and a further three religious officiants.
”We wanted to do something different on the wedding theme, something nobody else is doing, give it a little twist,” said Hamnqvist.
The event was timed to tie in with the marriage next weekend of Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling.
Newly-weds Sofia Skoog and Joakim Hedlund arrived at the park before nine o’clock in the morning.
“We’ve talked about getting married but never got round to it, and now we’ve had our second child. Then I saw a little ad for drop-in weddings,” said Skoog.
Johan and Cecilia Tejler also left the park satisfied.
“It was a good alternative to a big wedding.”
Ola Klasson and Ingela Landgren saw their wedding as ”a fun thing to do”.
“And it really was great. We arrived at ten past nine and had to wait until half past eleven but we met another couple and the hours just flew by,” said Ola Klasson.
