"It has been classified as attempted murder," Towe Hägg at Stockholm police told the Expressen daily.

The man was shot on Sveavägen, a street which passes through the heart of Stockholm's commercial shopping district.

"Everyone threw themselves to the floor and put their hands over their heads," a witness told the newspaper.

There are further reports of how witnesses saw two men running along the street and that one of them fired two or three shots. The two men disappeared from the scene in separate cars.

Soon after a car was stopped by police in the vicinity of Odenplan. The suspect has been arrested and the car impounded.

The injured man admitted himself to hospital.

"It was the hospital who called and told us that they had admitted a man with gunshot wounds," Hägg said.

Sveavägen was partially sealed off during the evening as police technicians examined the scene. Police have not yet been able to establish a motive for the attack.
