Flooding eases in the east
Flood waters in eastern Germany are easing after several tense days on high alert, officials there said on Tuesday.
Dikes are holding, a spokesperson from the high water alert centre in Frankfurt an der Oder said in the morning.
Over the weekend the rising Oder River strained dikes in the state of Brandenburg, breaking through one near the small town of Schwedt. Meanwhile part of an embankment had slipped near a bridge near the village of Neurüdnitz.
But river gauges in Frankfurt an der Oder on Tuesday morning showed the floodwaters had gone down by almost 20 centimetres overnight, the centre said.
On Monday evening the highest flood alarm level of four was reduced to the three.
Floodwaters are expected to continue to decrease, but alarm will remain high for the coming week.
According to Brandenburg's Environment Ministry, some €220 million has been invested in strengthening flood defences along the Oder since it broke its banks to devastating effect in 1997. Almost 90 percent of the 163 kilometres of dikes have been reinforced or rebuilt.
