'Lynch mob atmosphere' as car somersaults onto luxury vehicles

Angry bystanders detained three men who attempted to flee on Saturday after their vehicle overturned and landed on three parked cars at a shopping centre in south-west Sweden.

The accident took place shortly after lunchtime on Italienska Vägen in Boarp, 120 kilometres north of Malmö, resulting in damage to a total of eight cars.

“There was a lynch mob atmosphere. It was chaos when we arrived,” emergency services chief Michael Bengtsson told local newspaper Helsingborgs Dagblad.

Bengtsson surmised that the driver had bumped into the vehicle in front and lost control of the car, which skidded off the road, knocked over a fence and went into a spin.

Police said the three people in the car were heavily under the influence of drugs or alcohol. One of the men was taken to hospital in Helsingborg to be treated for what police believed were minor injuries.

All three men were initially arrested as police were unable to ascertain who was driving, but a 26-year-old later confessed to having been behind the wheel. He is suspected of negligent operation of a vehicle and driving under the influence.

Police said the mood at the scene was not helped by the fact that the cars that sustained the brunt of damage were of the more exclusive variety.

“The vehicles that were destroyed were pure luxury models,” police inspector Leif Nilsson told Helsingborgs Dagblad.
