Jehovah's Witness claims she was fired for beliefs

A care assistant from northern Sweden has reported her employers after they allegedly fired her for her religious beliefs.

The woman, a Jehovah’s Witness from Umeå, allegedly told a colleague that the Bible said that people were not meant to be born ill.

Her comments came after her colleague said she could see a purpose in the fact that their patient, a disabled girl, had been born with disabilities, as she had brought happiness to so many people.

The woman also gave her view on homosexuality, when asked by the colleague, according to the Västerbottens-Kuriren newspaper.

Following the conversation, the woman was called by her boss at a private care company who criticized the woman’s views on homosexuality. The boss also said that she had heard that the woman thought disabled children were a punishment from God.

“But that was the exact opposite of what I said,” the woman wrote in her complaint to the Discrimination Ombudsman.

The woman was told that the family of the girl had lost faith in her, although she writes in her complaint that she had never spoken with any members of the family about her beliefs.
