Sweden's four-party governing coalition talked up fiscal responsibility as one of its cornerstone policies when presenting its electoral programme on Saturday ahead of the September general election.

"The non-socialists are a guarantee for orderly and well-managed public finances, because this is the condition of well-being," the Minister for International Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson said.

The opposition, which is made up of the Social Democrat, Green and Left parties, are due to announce their electoral programme in a few days, based on a significant increase in public spending, financed in part by higher taxes.

"Prioritising work on benefits, good management of public finances ... concentrating on youth and staying at the cutting edge of the fight against climate change" are the coalition's policy objectives, Carlsson said.

In a survey published on May 6, the four-party coalition was ahead with 49.2 percent voter support against 47.4 percent for the opposition.
