Stockholm pub voted 'Best in the World'
A Stockholm pub has been voted the "Best pub in the World" in the Best of British awards for establishments outside of the UK, organized by the Daily Telegraph and British Airways.
The 2010 winner of the title is The Tudor Arms in the Östermalm area of the city which has been recognised for being "an institution in Stockholm for expats".
"I think we won as a result of almost 40 years of flying the flag for the UK in this part of the world - fantastic," said Tudor Arms landlord Chris Billowes to The Local on Tuesday.
The Tudor Arms beat off stiff competition from pubs spanning the globe - Sid's Pub in Kuala Lumpur, Carnegie's in Hong Kong, the George and Dragon in Dar-es-Salaam, the Bull's Head in Bangkok and The Royal Oak in Cape Town.
Billowes explained that the Tudor Arms is a old-style British local and punters can expect a warm, British welcome whenever they drop by which according to old UK tradition is 11.30am-11pm Monday to Friday, Saturday 1pm-11pm and Sunday 1pm-7pm, with 20 minutes drinking up time.
"Many of the other pubs are chains or run as businesses, but we are a dead ringer for a classic British pub. When you walk in you can't guess where you are, you wouldn't guess Stockholm," he said.
The Tudor Arms found out about its success last Thursday and were all set to receive the award at a gala dinner at the Westbury Hotel in London when their travel plans, and those of their co-finalists, were scuppered by the volcano flight chaos.
While the Icelandic ash had cast a shadow on the official celebrations it proved no hindrance for "the Tudor" to organize an impromptu "knees up".
"I went out and bought 40 bottles of champagne for our punters who came by on Friday, they didn't last long as you can imagine, so quizmaster Johnny is organizing a bigger do later on," said Chris Billowes.
The Daily Telegraph "Best of British" awards are organized together with British Airways and are divided into six categories - Best British Shop, Best British Social Club, Best British Restaurant, Best British Sporting Club, Best British Bar/Pub and Best British Business Club.
The 2010 competition attracted 11,000 votes from people plumping for over 600 British establishments worldwide.
