Stockholm universities are among the top choices for students this autumn, with medicine, law and economics the most popular fields of study, according to a new report from the Swedish Agency for Higher Education Services (Verket för högskoleservice - VHS).

According to the VHS statistics, the medical programme at Karolinska Institutet in Solna, in Stockholm County, has attracted the highest number of first choices among prospective students applying for courses in the autumn 2010.

Medicine at Karolinska is followed by the law programme at Stockholm University, and Business and Economics at the Stockholm School of Economics (Handelshögskolan i Stockholm).

The first non-Stockholm based course on the university pop charts is the digital imaging programme at Jönköping University in southern Sweden.

"We can see that it is the same type of courses at the major seats of learning which remain at the top of the lists of course applications. There is really nothing strange here as most of the specialist educations can be found there," said Tuula Kuosmanen in a VHS statement.

Autumn 2010 also heralds a new record in the number of applicants to Swedish higher education establishments with 340,634 people in total, an increase of four percent on 2009.

Stockholm is followed as the most popular student destination in Sweden by the twin historic university towns of Lund and Uppsala.

The Swedish Agency for Higher Education Services is a government authority with the prime directive of assisting Swedish higher education institutions with the admissions process.

The agency will continue to monitor the application process and will publish its annual university entrance statistics in July.
