Although spring has come to a screeching stop with snow and sleet in some parts of the country, things will gradually improve towards a drier and somewhat warmer weekend, the German Weather Service (DWD) reported Wednesday.

Wednesday afternoon and evening are set to remain changeable in the northern half of the country, with frequent showers in the northeast, some snow and scattered thunderstorms.

But the weather will remain sunnier and mostly dry in the south and west, with only the areas surrounding the Alps likely to see rain showers, the DWD said in a statement.

Overnight lows could drop to freezing - and perhaps even dive below zero - overnight as the weather remains cool in the northeast.

On Thursday high pressure system "Ottokar" should bring slowly improving conditions to most of the country, though.

Daytime temperature across the country will range from eight to 16 degrees Celsius. Cloudy and changeable weather will continue to prevail however, with scattered showers to the northeast of the Elbe River, the DWD report said.

The south will enjoy slightly brighter and drier conditions, with patchy cloud cover.

But clouds will likely break overnight for a crisp starry sky that will help temperatures sink to between -2 and 4 degrees, mainly in basin and valley areas.

Friday's weather will continue to brighten with clouds hanging around only in the north of the country, where there will also be a few scattered showers. High temperatures are expected to range from 11 degrees in the north to 18 degrees in the southwest.

In the night to Saturday, parts of northern Germany will remain cloudy, but for most part, clear and dry conditions will prevail with lows of between zero and -5 degrees with frost.

As the weekend kicks off on Saturday, Germany’s weather will be predominantly sunny and dry with only a few clouds in the north. Northern regions will stay cool in with highs of about 11 degrees, but balmier temperatures between 13 and 19 degrees will finally reach the rest of the country.

Apart from coastal regions that will likely be hit by onshore winds, the mercury should inch past 15 degrees on Sunday. Meanwhile the southwest could see summery climes of 25 degrees, the DWD said.
