Four German soldiers were wounded – some seriously – when their armoured vehicle crashed in Afghanistan on Tuesday, continuing a heavy run of casualties for the Bundeswehr.

According to a spokesman at Germany’s military command centre in Potsdam, the Eagle IV armoured car crashed Tuesday morning German time about 30 kilometres west of Fayzabad in the country's north.

The accident happened on the return journey from a regional reconstruction project in Kunduz to Fayzabad, though not apparently because of any enemy attack.

Rescue vehicles were deployed to collected the wounded and the accident is being investigated.

Four soldiers were killed and five injured last week when another Eagle IV was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

On top of another attack on Good Friday, there has been fierce debate about whether Bundeswehr troops are properly equipped and trained in the use of armoured vehicles.
