Crime drops for 2009
The number of criminal offences in Germany went down by 1.2 percent in 2009, a media report said on Tuesday.
Daily Die Welt got a glimpse of national police crime statistics set to be presented by Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière in mid-May, and reported that they were down to 6.04 million offences.
According to the document, only four states had an increase in crime: Schleswig-Holstein was up 1.1 percent, while North Rhine-Westphalia, Hamburg and Berlin edged up by less than one percent.
Meanwhile some states showed significant reductions. The northern state of Mecklenburg Western-Pomerania saw crime decrease by 6.1 percent, while in Saxony and Saarland crime dropped by 5.5 and 4.6 percent respectively.
But the end of border control due to extended Schengen territory caused an increase in car theft along the Polish and Czech borders, the report said. The eastern state of Saxony saw car theft jump by 32 percent to reach 893, the report said.
Meanwhile auto thefts in Berlin increased by 38.2 percent to 7,262. According to the paper, luxury brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche were most frequently stolen, then immediately spirited away to eastern Europe.
