T-Systems lands €100-million TUI deal
Deutsche Telekom’s unit T-Systems announced on Tuesday it had won a €100-million deal to build a telecommunications network for UK-based travel company TUI.
A spokesman for Telekom’s IT and business unit confirmed a report in the daily Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung that T-Systems would set up and operate TUI’s pan-European network for telephony and data over the next five years.
“We’re bringing our international business more closely together,” TUI’s IT chief Jim Mann told the paper. “That will enable us to improve our operations and customer service while cutting costs.”
T-Systems will connect the company’s 25,000 employees in seven different countries via a common IT network allowing them to video conference securely from their normal PCs. The system should also enable travel agencies to react more quickly to changes in TUI’s offerings.
The paper reported the hefty contract was being heralded internally at T-Systems as a “big deal” that would hopefully open the way to more business from large customers.
The Telekom unit recently landed energy giant BP, electronics concern Philips and logistics firm DHL, but insiders hope the volume of the TUI will help cement T-Systems position internationally.
“We’re the only provider in Europe offering one-stop convergent solutions for IT and telecommunications,” T-Systems boss Reinhard Clemens told the paper.
