The bizarre incident occurred in the small village of Olstorp, in the outskirts of Alingsås shortly before 4pm on Monday afternoon after a collision between two vehicles.

The couple, a man and woman, fled the scene in the man's car and police remain nonplussed as to their whereabouts.

"We have classified the crime as leaving the scene of an accident and car theft. They were driving a hire car, but we don't yet know if their names are on the contract," said Pia Goksöyr at Västra Götaland police.

The driver of the other car involved in the collision was taken to hospital with chest pains. According to the police, his injuries are not serious.
