Dogged winter weather caused a slew of road accidents across Germany overnight and clogged several motorways with traffic jams.

The roads of Hamburg, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia were the worst hit as arctic weather returned after a brief interval of warmer temperatures. Hamburg police counted no fewer than 130 accidents during the night, while in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein some 30 accidents were recorded, including one that resulted in three serious injuries.

A pile-up involving eleven cars, two ambulances and an emergency doctor's car also occurred on a motorway near the city of Bielefeld, as the slippery conditions set in during the night. There were no injuries, but the police estimated some €200,000 worth of damage.

According to police reports, an accident near Aschaffenburg caused traffic tailbacks some 40 kilometres long between Würzburg and Frankfurt on the A3 motorway. On the A70 in northern Bavaria, three articulated trucks slid into one another, blocking the motorway between Schirradorf and Thurnau-West, while an ambulance carrying an injured patient got stuck in the treacherous conditions in the Coburg district.

The German weather service had warned of heavy snowfall in northern regions on Friday night, but it is not expecting any more on Saturday.
