The Greek coast guard has confirmed two deaths as a result of the eight-metre waves that overtook the Cyprian ship “Louis Majesty” on Wednesday evening, breaking the windows of a glass atrium.
The German Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that the German man was from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The other man who died was reportedly Italian.
Some 1,350 passengers and 580 crew members were on board the cruise ship, which was on its way from Barcelona to Genoa, Italy on a tour of the western Mediterranean.
The ship’s Greek captain informed Spanish authorities of the accident, and the country’s officials will conduct an investigation into the event, according to the coast guard.
