It is not known how many Swedes were in Chile when the 8.8 magnitude quake hit off the coast of Concepcion early Saturday morning, Swedish time.

"The whole weekend we have been trying to get in touch with the missing Swedes in Chile. But is is very difficult to get through," Camilla Åkesson Lindblom at the foreign ministry told DN.

The foreign ministry has confirmed that it has received one report of a dead male Swede but this has not been confirmed by Chilean authorities, according to the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.

More than 700 people are reported to have been killed in the quake which has caused massive structural damage to cities along Chile's Pacific coast which lies on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire on the boundary of the Nazca and South American plates.

As the quake struck below the ocean it set off tsunami warnings across the Pacific rim. While the tsunami waves claimed several hundred lives in Chile, there have been no reports of any major damage or casualties in any of the several Pacific nations also hit.
