Teenage bus drivers proposed by government

The Swedish Government wants to lower the age to 18 for obtaining a license to drive a bus or taxi. The idea is to attract younger people into the profession.

The current minimum is 21 years. “We want to develop and upgrade training in this profession,” explained Infrastructure Minister Åsa Torstensson.

This kind of training would take place in the nation’s upper secondary schools (gymnasium) or as part and parcel of related education.

She said the proposed change would entail one restriction. Those between the ages of 18 to 20 years would not be permitted to drive buses on routes stretching more than 50 kilometres.
