Flight crews warned off the booze
Tighter drinking-and-flying regulations for airline crews are set to be introduced by the Swedish government.
The new restrictions would mean that blood level alcohol content must not exceed .02 promilles eight hours before takeoff - in other words, practically no alcohol at all.
The stricter promille level would match that for automobile drivers in Sweden.
The new regulations also stipulate that unruly airline passengers exhibiting drunken behavior affecting aircraft performance will face stiffer penalties. They will now risk six months imprisonment instead of heavy fines under existing regulations.
The new regulations are expected to be introduced in September.
Whether an airplane or car or moped, Sweden regards drunk driving as a serious crime. The legal limit is only a quarter of that in Britain, Canada and the United States. Police are permitted to require alcohol blood tests and drink driving offences regularly result in prison sentences.
The incidence of drunk driving in Sweden is as a result considerably lower than in many other comparable countries.
