Germans aren't known for being particularly shy about bare skin, so it's only fitting a new exhibition in Hamburg is highlighting 150 years of nude photography - from blushing Victorians to Marilyn Monroe.

Is a picture of the human body base pornography or a work of art?

The exhibition “Nude Visions - 150 Years of Nude Photography” at Hamburg´s Kunst und Gewerbe museum explores the changing perception of beauty and morality over the decades through the lens of a camera.

It strips down the evolution of nude photography and reveals the artist´s struggle to balance educational openness, titillation and curiosity.

As to be expected, the show bares all – from the blushes captured in the first coloured Daguerreotypes of voluptuous Victorians to modern full-frontal nudity and exhibitionism.

More than 250 original photos, books and folders with nude studies from different eras are on display. Photographs dating from the 19th century showing models in poses mimicking classical antiquity butt up to surrealistic experiments from fashion and lifestyle photography.
