Police received a report of shots being fired on Rasmusgatan shortly after 8pm on Sunday evening.

They arrived to find two male victims, a 17-year-old who had been hit in the chest and a 36-year-old with a bullet wound to his leg.

Police believe the shots were meant for the 17-year-old, while the 36-year-old, a tourist visiting Malmö from the former Yugoslavia, was accidentally struck by a stray bullet.

“He had bad luck. He was on his way into the shop to buy a new SIM card for his telephone when he was shot,” Malmö police spokesperson Anders Lindell told The Local.

“He’s been bandaged up and will be on his way home tomorrow.”

The other victim in the shooting, who was taken to a thorax clinic in nearby Lund, remained in hospital on Monday, with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

“He was feeling better today,” said Lindell, who added that police were able to question him about the shooting.

“Nothing he said helped bring the investigation forward,” he said.

Early Monday morning, police apprehended a 30-year-old suspected of firing the shots in what Lindell characterized as a “violent” arrest.

But the suspect refused to give anything away during a police interrogation held later on Monday.

“We questioned the man we arrested as well, but he refused to say anything,” said Lindell.

Shell casings were recovered at the scene, but no weapon has been found.

Police continue their probe into the motive for the shooting, which has been classified as attempted murder.
