Sweden arrests Bosnian war crimes suspect
A 43-year-old war crimes suspect originally from Bosnia-Herzegovina was arrested on Tuesday in northern Sweden.
The suspect, who is a Swedish citizen, served as a guard at a prison camp for Bosnian Serb civilians from May to August 1992, according to a statement from the Swedish Prosecution Authority (Åklagarmyndigheten).
The 43-year-old is suspected of crimes that include serious human rights violations, murder and kidnapping. His arrest follows a lengthy preliminary investigation carried out by the Swedish national police force's war crimes commission.
"There has been considerable international cooperation involving many countries as well as the UN tribunal in The Hague," said prosecutor Magnus Elving.
Elving, a prosecutor at the international public prosecution office, has until Thursday to decide whether to request a remand hearing for the suspect.
Elving declined to comment further on the case when contacted by The Local.
