Rescue workers and police are searching for two climbers who went missing two days ago on Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, in southern Bavaria.

The two men, aged 31 and 42 from the Stuttgart area, went missing on the ridge that connects the Zugspitze and the neighbouring Alpspitze. According to the police, one of the men telephoned a family member on December 27, the last contact anyone had with them. They were reported missing Tuesday morning when a planned call Monday evening was not made.

Rescue workers have already located the men's car on a car park at the foot of the Zugspitze. But weather conditions prevented either a helicopter search or an attempt to climb the ridge in search of them.

Two helicopters were sent on Wednesday, but new snowfall had covered any possible traces of the men. Weather also prevented continuing the search on Thursday morning.

According to the police, attempting to climb this ridge in winter is considered extremely difficult, and should only be attempted by experienced alpine mountaineers.
