7,000 without power in western Sweden
Heavy snowfall left many around the country without electricity on Boxing Day. Around 7,000 of Vattenfall's customers in western Sweden experienced power outages. The worst affected area was Dalsland, where several households were without electricity for two days.
“Wet snow has fallen on trees and branches that then have fallen down on the power lines. Dalsland, Mellerud, Vänersborg and Säffle were hit the hardest,” Magnus Örvell, press officer at Vattenfall, told TT news agency.
The power outage in western Sweden began on Friday evening. Repair work had to be stopped around 9 pm on Saturday, when almost 3,700 customers in Dalsland remained without electricity.
“We hope to have all electricity back on Sunday, but some may have to still wait until the evening,” Örvell said.
Repair work – employing 100 people, 10 tracked vehicles and 2 helicopters – began again early Sunday morning.
Besides Vattenfall, other major power companies have also been plagued by outages. Around 4,000 of Fortum's customers in Dalarna in central Sweden were without electricity on Saturday afternoon.
Eon's customers were also affected. “It was primarily in Östergötland (in southern Sweden). At the most, it was around 1,100 customers, but it was a fairly short outage,” Anna Nystedt, press officer at Eon, told TT.
