Drivers urged to stay off icy Skåne roads

A major snowstorm has hit Skåne in southern Sweden, blanketing roads and causing snow drifts, primarily in the Söderslätt area. Majors efforts are being taken to plough the roads, but the Swedish Road Administration (Vägverket) encourages drivers to stay off the roads on Sunday morning.

More than 10 traffic accidents were reported to the Skåne police on Saturday night, primarily in the western and southern parts of the county.

“These are the typical incidents that occur when it snows a lot. But there have been no injuries,” Sofie Österheim, information officer at the Skåne police, told TT news agency.

A car drove into a rail along the E 6 highway near Landskrona just after 6 am. In Malmö, a bus skidded around 7 am and had to be towed.

All accidents are believed to be weather related. “But considering the circumstances, we haven't seen a lot of accidents. People are being careful or staying at home,” Österheim said.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) hasn't issued any weather advisories. The snowfall in Skåne is expected to abate during the day.
