Train delays in Stockholm due to winter weather

Major train delays in Stockholm and the surrounding region were reported on Friday afternoon and evening. Several trains were delayed or cancelled due to winter weather and a train stalled on the tracks between Flemingsberg and Södertälje. Trains are expected to be running on schedule on Saturday.

Inclement weather has also affected public transportation in several other regions of Sweden. Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) newspaper reported that different cities have had different reactions to delays in terms of local “travel guarantees” (resegaranti).

The travel guarantees offer reimbursement for taxi fare to passengers who are significantly delayed on public transportation. It doesn't apply in cases where planned disruptions for maintenance, among other things, have been announced ahead of time.

On Thursday, Skånetrafiken cancelled its travel guarantee, SvD reported. The public transport provider for southern Sweden invoked force majeure, which means that no reimbursement is to be paid in case of extreme conditions that cannot be controlled.

Stockholm Public Transport (SL) in the Swedish capital has yet to follow suit. SL press secretary Gisela Poellinger told SvD that the travel guarantee would be withdrawn only if “the entire community is completely cut shut down.”

“But not for a serious weather situation where the situation is back and forth. A passenger can't be expected to be able to predict such things,” she said.
