The ten most popular German search categories were divided into people, images, popular products, news, and the “fastest-growing search words,” which was dominated by the rapidly rising popularity of social networks.

While Fox put ageing pop star Spears in second place for people searches, up-and-coming pop-diva Lady Gaga grabbed the number one spot in image-related searches, followed by vampire fantasy film “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson and the late King of Pop Michael Jackson. Fox was also in the top ten image searches for Germany, appearing in sixth place.

The growing popularity of social networks was reflected in the results as well, with Facebook, YouTube and meinVZ all on the top-five for the fastest-growing search words category. Microsoft’s new operating system, “Windows 7” took the top spot.

Top news-related searches naturally reflected recent headlines, with swine flu in first place. Michael Jackson and lotto – which recently had a record jackpot, were in second and third place.

Youtube remained the most popular search word overall, pulling ahead of online auction site eBay at number two. “Weather” was in third place.

The iPhone and iPod touch were particularly popular among product-related searches, holding the top two spots in the field.
