The southbound A6 motorway near Mannheim was closed for six hours on Friday morning after a truck transporting cattle tipped over and the freed animals roamed the autobahn.

The police said the truck was on its way from Münster to Pforzheim when it drove off the right shoulder of the motorway. As the driver – who is thought to have dozed off – tried to regain control, the vehicle carrying 24 young bulls flipped.

A dozen of the animals escaped from the wreckage and began to wander around the motorway, forcing the police to play cowboy as they rustled them together towards a nearby parking lot.

A few of the bulls suffered slight injuries in the accident, but all were eventually loaded into other trucks. The 53-year-old driver was unharmed.
