Young trio sold sex with mentally disabled girl

Three young people have been indicted in Malmö on pimping charges for repeatedly selling the sexual services of a 14-year-old girl with a mild mental disability.

Formal charges were presented at Malmö district court on Monday to a 17-year-old girl, a 19-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man, all of whom are suspected of the offence of aggravated pimping.

A police investigation has shown that the girl was pimped out to around five customers a week in the four-month period ranging from September to December 2008.

Each of the customers paid between 500 kronor ($75) and 1,000 kronor for the girl's sexual service, with the lion's share of the revenue going straight into the pockets of the three suspects.

"They drove around to different parts of Malmö seeking out the men. There doesn't seem to have been any advertising involved," said prosecutor Ulrika Rogland.

The female suspects, who are believed to have been the driving force behind the operation, both admit to having used the 14-year-old girl for financial gain.

"They saw it as a way of earning money and didn't really understand how serious it is," said Rogland.

The prosecutor said the 14-year-old girl, who has a minor mental disability, has found the whole experience very trying. Rogland said she would have preferred for the investigation to have been concluded in a more timely manner, since the victim's family first reported their suspicions in February of this year.

"The girl was questioned at the time but the case was set aside. It's problematic that the domestic violence unit lacks resources," said Rogland.

Not until September were the two female suspects placed under arrest.

Anna Gustafsson, Malmö police's project manager for investigations of this nature, declined to comment on the individual case.

"We are continually prioritizing," she said. "We just know there are an awful lot of serious sexual offences at the same time."
