Products from former East German states have “recaptured” their place on supermarket shelves, according to a quality test by the latest edition of Frankfurt-based consumer magazine Öko-Test.

The magazine tested 27 different products against others from the western half of the country with mostly positive results.

“Fifteen products are very good, six products good. These results really speak for themselves,” editor in chief Jürgen Stellpflug said in a statement.

The tested grocery products included bread, cake mix, barley malt coffee, Spreewald gherkins, and sparkling wine. The magazine tested for harmful substances such as acrylamide.

Only four products were less than impressive. Three received a ranking of “adequate,” and one failed the test to receive an “inadequate” mark. The Frishli brand strawberry quark contained too much aroma, fat and sugar, the magazine said.
