Politicians accused of jumping flu jab queue

Uppsala County Council is facing criticism after politicians and leading civil servants were offered the chance to have the swine flu vaccine, regardless of whether they belong to a high-risk group.

The council states that they should be classed as priority and not have to wait to receive the vaccine. A drop-in clinic was especially organised for a number of chosen members last week.

”We need to have leading politicians at hand if important decisions need to be taken in a situation where a pandemic occurs,” Kerstin Westholm, county council director told the Uppsala Nya Tidning newspaper.

Ismail Kamil, Liberal Party MP and chair of the local Health and Welfare Board has been vaccinated and supports the council initiative.

“As a council member responsible for billions of crowns I believe that I belong to a priority group,” he said. “I also have small children.”

Social Democrat politician Börje Wennberg admits he does not fit the criteria for a high-risk group criteria and states many others had the vaccine before him.

“If we politicians were given an unfair advantage is a question of definition but it could be perceived that way,” he added.
