Massive problems for Tele2 mobile customers

Millions of Swedes have had trouble using their mobile phones on Wednesday morning due to problems with the network of Swedish mobile operator Tele2.

An estimated 3.5 million customers had trouble making calls on Wednesday.

Even calls to Sweden’s 112 emergency number were affected by the network problems, which started around 6am Wednesday morning following a software update for Tele2 customer telephones.

“It was planned maintenance which we carried out overnight which included an update for all our customers. Since then, there has been a growing line as people’s telephones have been restarted,” said Tele2 spokesperson Annika Kristersson to the TT news agency.

She added that text messages sent during the outage were not lost, but would remain in a holding bay until the network problems were resolved.

Kristersson said it was still possible for Tele2 customers to call the 112 emergency number by restarting their phone.

“Take out the SIM-card and restart the telephone. Then you should at least be able to call 112,” she said.

The Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) now plans to investigate the incident.

“We take the interruption very seriously, most of all because its affected people’s ability to call SOS Alarm,” that agencies Christoffer Karberg told TT, referring to Sweden’s emergency telephone service.

PTS, along with a number of other state agencies and companies, are Tele2 clients and have thus been affected by the outage.

Among the companies struggling to cope with the network problems are several taxi companies, including Taxi Stockholm, Taxi 020, as well as affiliates Taxikurir and Taxi Skåne.

“The drivers couldn’t call us and the neither could customers,” said Taxi 020 spokesperson Stefan Nyman to TT.

According to Kristersson, Tele2’s network is almost back to normal, but she couldn’t say exactly when customers would once again be able to make calls.

“We expect traffic to be flowing normally again sometime this afternoon,” she said.
