National rail operator Deutsche Bahn is now offering eco-tickets for corporate customers to encourage sustainable travel, the company announced on Monday.

First customers of the tickets, which cost an average of one percent more than regular tickets, include Deutsche Post, SAP and McDonald’s.

“We as Deutsche Bahn, together with the leaders among our major customers, want to signal a promotion of climate protection even in economically difficult times,” Deutsche Bahn head Ulrich Homburg said.

When company trips are booked, the amount of energy used is calculated and the amount is then purchased from a sustainable energy source such as a hydroelectric plant – instead of the standard energy from coal-fired or nuclear power plants.

Should demand be high enough, the company also plans to offer the tickets to regular customers too.

Deutsche Bahn plans to have the origin of the sustainable energy certified by Munich-based testing company Tüv Süd.
