The couple, who lived on the top floor apartment in the island’s capital city of Palma de Mallorca, were both about 60 years old, but police were unable to provide further details of their identities.

The 50-year-old four-storey building collapsed early on Monday morning. Residents reported it was dilapidated and had cracks in the walls. Seven people died and two others were injured in the incident.

Rescue workers were at the scene of the collapse for some 12 hours recovering victims’ bodies from several metres of rubble.

“Everything happened within five seconds,” one resident told daily Diario de Mallorca. “Where the building once stood there was suddenly only a huge cloud of dust.”

Authorities evacuated six nearby buildings, forcing 59 people to spend the night in hotels.

Mallorca is a beloved German vacation destinations and many Germans have relocated to the island permanently.
